The signs of aging are first felt around the eyes in the facial area. Both the upper and lower eyelids can be affected. Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat tissue that has lost its elasticity or become saggy due to a loss of strength in the ligaments of both eyelids. The surgery replaces your tired and aged appearance with a fresh and youthful look. The upper and lower eyelids can be operated on separately or during the same session.
Anyone who complains of loss of elasticity and fat deposits in the upper or lower eyelid can have this surgery.
Your overall health will be assessed during the consultation. Your current illnesses, medications you are taking, and any surgeries you have undergone will be discussed.
A detailed examination is performed. The shape of your eyelids and the elasticity of their skin are assessed.
Photos are taken before every cosmetic surgery.
Upper eyelid surgery leaves a scar along the natural crease of the upper eyelid; lower eyelid surgery leaves a scar in the shape of a line at the base of the lower lashes. These scars are barely noticeable at conversational distance. Detailed information is provided.
The scar left by the surgery will be permanent. Although it will be more noticeable at first, it will fade within a year.
Upper eyelid surgery can be performed under local anesthesia and sedation, or under local anesthesia alone. It takes approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour. Excess skin and muscle tissue in the upper eyelid is removed. If necessary, fatty tissue causing puffiness is also removed.
Lower eyelid surgery is performed under general anesthesia. It takes approximately 1 hour. An incision is made at the base of the lower eyelashes. The fatty tissue causing puffiness and excess skin are removed.
Bandages are applied to the wound sites. Stitches are removed in the first week.
If you received sedation or general anesthesia, we recommend staying in the hospital for one night after surgery. You will experience minimal pain. We prescribe painkillers and eye drops after discharge. We recommend protecting yourself from the sun.
You can see the results of the surgery immediately, but the swelling associated with the operation will take about 1 month to subside, and it will take 6-12 months for the eyelids to settle into their final shape.
The results of the surgery are permanent.
Every surgery has risks. There may be early or late complications related to anesthesia or surgery.
In the early postoperative period, bleeding, infection, or wound dehiscence may occur. Your scars may heal with some swelling.
You may experience symptoms such as stinging or burning in your eyes specifically related to this surgery. These symptoms can be treated with eye drops.
