Every surgery has risks. There may be early or late complications due to anesthesia or surgery.

In the early period of surgery, conditions such as bleeding, infection or wound opening may be observed. There may be slight size and shape asymmetries between the breasts. There may be numbness in the nipple. These are usually temporary complaints. However, seldom permanent loss of sensation may occur. The risk is increased, especially in smokers. Your scars may heal with swelling.

A complication that may be specific to this surgery is the loss of part or all of the nipple. Although very rare, it is possible. Especially in smokers, the risk increases as nipple nutrition will be impaired. The risk increases in excessively large breasts called gigantomastia and in breasts that have undergone too much reduction.

  • Does breast reduction cause breast cancer?

Breast reduction surgery does not cause breast cancer. It is recommended that everyone be screened for age-appropriate breast cancer before each breast surgery. In addition, an advantage of this surgery is the chance of detecting breast cancer in the removed breast tissue, which has started microscopically and is at such an early stage that it cannot be detected by radiological examinations. In this way, very early-stage breast cancers are also detected if they are present in the removed tissue.

  • Can I breastfeed after breast reduction?

The connections between the nipple and milk ducts are preserved during the surgery. Therefore, breastfeeding is not expected, but it is possible.
