Breast Lift

Mastopexy
Breast lift is the process of surgically restoring sagging, hollowed-out breasts that have lost their young and fresh appearance over time and with the effect of gravity. The surgery can be performed alone or supported by breast implants, depending on the breast volume of the patient.
  • Why do breasts sag?

The breast is an organ that cannot resist gravity due to its structure. Breast tissue shifts downwards due to reasons such as advancing age, frequent weight gain, pregnancy, and breastfeeding.

  • What is done in the pre-operative examination?

The pre-operative examination is the assessment of your general health status. Your current diseases, medications, previous operations, and family history of breast diseases are checked. Your pregnancy and breastfeeding history is questioned.
Your pregnancy and breastfeeding history are questioned.
Then your detailed examination is performed.
The volume, sagging of your breast, and the quality of your skin are also evaluated.
According to the volume of your breast, it is decided whether a breast implant is necessary.
It is recommended to be screened for breast cancer before every cosmetic breast surgery.
Before each plastic surgery operation, your photos are taken.

  • Where will my scar be? Will it be permanent?

According to the technique used, our surgery will leave a trace around the nipple and as a straight line extending downwards, in the form of a lollipop, or in addition to this, in the under-breast groove, expressed as an “inverted t”.
We inform you in detail in the pre-operative examination.
The scar left in the surgery will be permanent. Although it is more obvious at first, it will become vague within 1 year.

  • How is breast lift surgery performed? How many hours does it take?

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. It takes about 2 hours. Your nipple is moved to where it should be and excess skin is removed. Depending on the need, negative pressure tubes called drains may be required to prevent blood and serum from accumulating in the breast.

  • How long will I stay in the hospital after the operation? Will I have pain? When will I recover?

We recommend that you stay in the hospital for 1 night after the operation. You will have pain that can be controlled with painkillers. We recipe painkillers and antibiotics on discharge. We recommend that you rest for 7-10 days. You also need to use a special bra for 6 weeks.

  • Is the result of the surgery permanent?

The result of the surgery is permanent. However, it is impossible to resist the effect of gravity. Especially if there are reasons such as frequent weight gain, loss, pregnancy and breastfeeding, recovery surgery may be required in the following years against the sagging that will develop over the years.

  • What are the risks of the surgery?

Every surgery has risks. There may be early or late complications due to anesthesia or surgery.

Conditions such as bleeding, infection, or wound dehiscence may occur in the early period of surgery. There may be slight size and shape asymmetries between the breasts. There may be excessive sensation or numbness in the nipple. These are usually temporary complaints.

Over the years, sagging of the breasts may occur again (due to gravity, frequent weight gain, pregnancy, and/or breastfeeding).

A complication that may be specific to this surgery is the loss of part or all of the nipple. Although very rare, it is possible. Especially in smokers, the risk increases as nipple nutrition will be impaired.

Another complication that may occur in people who have breast implants is capsular contracture. Every foreign body that enters the body is surrounded by a capsule. Although the cause is not known exactly, in some cases, this capsule may thicken and harden, causing breast deformity and even pain. In these cases, it is necessary to clean this capsule with a second surgical procedure.

Another risk that may occur with the capsule is the development of Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL). Although ALCL is not breast cancer, it is a type of lymph cancer. It is not directly caused by the breast implants. It can develop from the capsule formed around any foreign body placed in the body. It is a very rare complication.

  • Does breast lift cause breast cancer?

Breast lift surgery does not cause breast cancer. It is recommended that everyone be screened for age-appropriate breast cancer before each breast surgery.

  • Can I breastfeed after a breast lift?

The connections between the nipple and milk ducts are preserved during the surgery. Therefore, problems with breastfeeding are not expected, but they are possible. Also, considering the negative effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding on breast shape, it is recommended that breast lift surgery be performed at least 6 months after the last breastfeeding.
