Gynecomastia

Breast Tissue Growth in Men
Gynecomastia is breast enlargement in men. It can be single or double-sided. It can cause psychological and social problems in patients. It usually occurs during adolescence and is permanent. The cause is generally unknown. However, some diseases and drug use can cause gynecomastia. Gynecomastia may be characterized by the enlargement of mammary gland tissue or adipose tissue in the breast. If there is only excess adipose (fatty) tissue, it can only be treated with liposuction. However, if there is an excess of mammary gland tissue, extra interventions may be required. Especially in cases with excess skin, such procedures' necessity may increase.
  • What is done in the pre-operative examination?

  • Where will my scar be? Will it be permanent?

If our surgery will be performed using only the liposuction technique, you will have 1-2 scars of 0.5 cm. However, if the mammary glands also need to be removed, then you will have a half-moon scar on the edge of the brown part of the breast. In case of excessive skin sagging, if the excess skin needs to be removed, the scar that will remain in this case will be more. We inform you in detail during our initial examination.

The scar left in the surgery will be permanent. Although it is more obvious at first, it will become vague within 1 year.

  • How is gynecomastia surgery performed? How many hours does it take?

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. It takes about 1-2 hours. For liposuction, 0.5 cm entrance holes are opened from a place close to your breast tissue. With the help of these holes, a liquid is given inside so that you do not feel pain. Afterward, the fatty (adipose) tissue is removed by vacuuming. If this method is not sufficient, it is necessary to take the mammary gland tissues from a semicircular incision just below your nipple.

  • How long will I stay in the hospital after the operation? Will I have pain? When will I recover?

We recommend that you stay in the hospital for 1 night after the operation. Pain is almost non-existent in gynecomastia surgeries. We prescribe painkillers and antibiotics on discharge. We recommend that you rest for 7-10 days. You also need to use a special corset for 6 weeks.

  • Can I see the result of the surgery immediately?

You can see the result of the surgery immediately, but it will take about 1 month for the swelling to go down and 6-12 months for the breast to take its final shape.

  • Is the result of the surgery permanent?

The result of the surgery is permanent.

  • Will my breasts grow back after gynecomastia?

After gynecomastia surgery, the breasts are not expected to grow again. However, in rare diseases or if a lot of weight is gained, breast volume may increase as there will be fat accumulation in the breast tissue like other parts of the body.

  • Can I have gynecomastia surgery again?

In case of breast size due to weight gain, you can have gynecomastia surgery again.

  • What are the risks of the surgery?

Every surgery has risks. There may be early or late complications due to anesthesia or surgery.

In the early period of surgery, conditions such as bleeding, infection or wound opening may be observed. There may be slight size asymmetries between the breasts. There may be numbness in the nipple. These are usually temporary complaints. However, seldom permanent loss of sensation may occur. The risk is increased, especially in smokers. In the recovery period, depressions may rarely occur with the reduction of edema. Your scars may heal with swelling.

  • Does gynecomastia cause breast cancer?

Gynecomastia surgery does not cause breast cancer. However, a cancer mass in the breast may go unnoticed within an enlarged breast tissue. For this reason, it is recommended that everyone be screened for age-appropriate breast cancer before each breast surgery.
